The film was shown as the last installment of the CBS anthology series Ford Star Jubilee. It was first broadcast on television on Saturday, November 3, 1956. But since this remake is more “urgent than ever,” what new delights could it bring to audiences? Let’s just hope the Wicked Witch of the West’s story line isn’t an allegory for cancel culture. The Wizard of Oz, produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, was first released in theatres on August 25, 1939, then re-released nationwide in 1949 and again in 1955. There’s a Muppets version, an anime television series, and Broadway and West End musicals (plus Wicked, which is basically The Wizard of Oz fanfic). Others famously include 1978’s The Wiz, starring Diana Ross as Dorothy and Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow in an all-Black cast, and, most recently, Disney’s 2013 Oz the Great and Powerful.
It premiered on January 6th, 2017 as a two-hour event. It had been initially reported on August 22nd 2014 that the network wasn’t planning to pick it up, but in April 2015 it was announced that they are going to make the series with a 10 episode first season. The book has been adapted many times before - the most famous, of course, being the 1939 version with Judy Garland. Emerald City is a short-lived Oz TV series that was broadcast by NBC from January to March 2017. “The opportunity to examine the original themes - the quest for courage, love, wisdom, and home - feels more timely and urgent than ever,” Kassell told Deadline. To give it a secondary market, episodes of the show were later re-edited into four films and released in the United States on VHS and Laserdisc (and later DVD), in which major plots and storylines are removed in favour of cutting each story-arc down into their retrospective book-canon story. The English version attempted to completely occlude the show's Japanese origins, going so far as to remove all Japanese names and studios from the credits and to credit key aspects of the animation to Westerners, which applied primarily to the CGI opening sequence. Actress Margot Kidder was hired as narrator, and the Canadian band Parachute Club provided songs for the series, which aired as a mini-series. Production for the English version was done by the Canadian company Cookie Jar Entertainment (known then as Cinar). In 1987, HBO purchased the rights to the series and dubbed it into English.
